Facebook Sales Beat Forecasts, but Expenses Increase Even Faster

SAN FRANCISCO — When Mark Zuckerberg warned investors three months ago that Facebook’s expenses were going to rise sharply, he really meant it.

The company reported on Wednesday that revenue increased 49 percent in the fourth quarter compared to the previous year, exceeding Wall Street’s expectations. But expenses rose even faster, up 87 percent from the same quarter a year ago, driven in part by a huge increase in stock payouts to employees.  Read more

Performance marketing technology company Criteo recently released its 2015 eCommerce Industry Outlook report, which highlights key trends that will have a significant impact on the industry over the course of the year. The report helps advertisers stay ahead of the curve and adjust their marketing strategies and investments to align with consumers’ evolving online shopping behaviors.

Criteo’s predictions, based on data insights from billions of online transactions, include:

  1. Enhancing cross-device capabilities will be a major focus as 58 percent of retail executives and ad agencies rank the technology as the most important of their 2015 mobile marketing efforts1
  2. Rapid growth in native advertising will be driven by programmatic buying
  3. Brick-and-mortar retailers will heavily focus on online strategies as webrooming and showrooming will have an increasing impact on sales
  4. Retailers will put a heavy emphasis on app re-engagement as 42 percent of retail executives and ad agencies rank consumer engagement as the primary goal of mobile app strategies  Read more

IBM is introducing a new mainframe in a bet that clients will need its souped-up speed and security to handle a surge in consumers using smartphones for everything from banking to checking health-care records.

The z13 system can encrypt and analyze data in real time and process 30,000 transactions a second, International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) announced today. That means faster and safer transactions for consumers on mobile phones. The system is the result of five years of development and a more than $1 billion investment, said Donna Dillenberger, an IBM distinguished engineer who helped develop the machine.  Read more
